I was at the Redcar Heart this morning for the investiture of the new Mayor - Cllr Stuart Smith.
Stuart is a top bloke, former police officer and long standing councillor for Saltburn. I’ve known him for a few years now and is a credit to the town and to our borough.
Stuart is now the Civic Mayor and first citizen of the borough. It’s a different type of Mayor than Ben Houchen or Andy Preston. A civic mayor is a ceremonial position and is not political, but instead represents our local authority as an ambassador for Redcar & Cleveland and chairs meetings of the Council.
He wears chains of office and you’ll be seeing him at a lot of the civic events throughout the year - such as remembrance - and he’ll also be raising money for his Mayoral charities (Teesside Hospice & The Great North Air Ambulance).
Congratulations again Mr Mayor!
