Revisiting the Materials Processing Institute… a while since I’d last been there but what a transformation in that time.
I remember working closely with MPI when I first became an MP, to secure £22.5million funding for an R&D project looking at cutting carbon emissions from Steel production.
We were successful - and Rishi announced the funding in his first budget in March 2020.
Fast forward to today, and the project is well underway demonstrating how we can decarbonise our steel industry, and build new steel alloys for use in nuclear fusion and other applications.
It’s a real Teesside success story and once again demonstrates how we continue to be a world leader in this area.
And as this project shows, we can rebuild our industries while decarbonising - the two can go hand in hand - creating the jobs of the future… glad to be playing a part in it.
