Jacob met with Marske Litter Action group today to talk about their fantastic work helping to keep our beach clean - but also the urgent need for Northumbrian Water to address some of the sewage overflows along our coast line.
Marske has two sewage overflows, but there’s further overflows in Redcar, in Saltburn and down on the Tees.
It means that at the moment, when there is heavy rainfall, and the sewage system can’t cope - the overflow discharges onto or near the beach.
The overflows seem to have been increasing in recent years and so Jacob will be arranging a meeting with Northumbrian Water to see what can be done to prevent this.
A key way that we can all help, is making sure we only put things down the loo that are meant to go down the loo!
Plastics, wipes and sanitary towels clog up sewage pipes - leading to more overflows - and some find their way to the storm drains too, leading to them being dumped on our beach.
